If you’ve watched even one episode of The Biggest Loser TV show, you know that the contestants have had some pretty amazing results.
Think about it though: if you had to spend six hours a day in the gym, pull tractors and pickups, and eat what the trainers told you to eat, you’d lose a lot of weight too!
The producers won’t ever tell you this, but many contestants gain the weight back once they get home.
The REAL Reason Diets Don’t Work
Let’s face it: who has time to spend more than an hour a day at the gym and eat nothing but shakes and salads every day? Doesn’t sound very motivating, does it?
That type of diet is not sustainable and it’s not one that is recommended for long term weight loss.
But, strangely enough, that really isn’t the reason that diets don’t work. Take a look at your typical grocery store shelves: fat-free yogurt, sugar-free candy, zero-calorie this and low-carb that. It sounds great on the surface, right? Eat as much as you want, with no consequences. If that were the case, why is obesity more of an epidemic now than ever before?
The answer is simple: food manufacturers have listened to consumer demands for lower calorie foods and have strived to deliver; but this comes at a price. Many of the ingredients that they use to substitute the fat, sugar, and carbs are foreign entities to the body and cannot be digested properly. The body doesn’t know what to do with these substitutes, and stores them as – you guessed it –fat.
Consider also that as many as one-third to one-half of North Americans suffers from some type of digestion issue, such as IBS, Crone’s Disease or other conditions. Health food stores are now stocked with a variety of ‘colon cleansing’ products that were never heard of 30 years ago.
The fact is, North Americans are eating food that is over-processed, full of foreign ingredients, and is labeled to make us think we are eating healthy.
It would be easy to blame the food industry for the problem of obesity; and to some extent they are to blame. However, we have to take responsibility for our own health and our own bodies, and that means educating ourselves on what is good and what isn’t. Read every single food label before you put it in your grocery store cart.
If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, don’t buy it. Anything that has ‘modified’ before it, like ‘modified corn starch’ is something that came from a lab; put it back on the shelf.
Losing weight and being healthy is not about eating salad for the rest of your life; it’s about learning which foods are best and which ones to stay away from. There are plenty of choices out there; it’s up to you to find the right ones.
For example, stevia is a natural sugar substitute and is much better than opting for saccharin, sucralose or Splenda. Honey is also a natural sweetener. Carbs are not the enemy. In fact, choosing a variety of whole grains like breads and rice will help you maintain your energy levels and will improve brain function.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a good choice, and can be seasoned with a variety of herbs to enhance flavor.
Here’s a good rule of thumb: if it has been grown in the ground, on a tree or bush, then it’s likely a good choice. The less the food has been processed and touched by human hands, the better. That doesn’t mean you can never eat chocolate again or indulge once in awhile. Dieting is not about eating less – it’s about eating smarter.
